Veterans Memorial Ownership
For the first time in its history, the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association owns the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial and the land upon which it stands. While the Association has always managed the property and organized the many special events at the Memorial, the Memorial was most recently owned by the Federal Government and earlier, the City of San Diego.
In July 2015, the Association purchased the half-acre parcel of land upon which the Memorial stands for $1.4 million from the U.S. Department of Defense. A condition of the sale is that the Association maintain the site as a “veterans memorial in perpetuity.”
The following year, on Sept. 7, the 27-year-old court case that objected to the presence of the Mt. Soledad cross on public property was ruled moot by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Thus ended one of the longest running battles over religious symbols on public property in the country, including lawsuits, court rulings, property transfers and aborted sales. The Mt. Soledad case went up and down the court systems, including two trips to the U.S. Supreme Court, before its resolution.
